Students from across Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) showcased creativity, teamwork, and career-ready skills at the Great Canadian High School Hospitality Challenge held May 28, 2026, at Cedar Rail Campground in Chesley.
The hands-on event brought together secondary students from Walkerton District Community School, Saugeen District Senior School, Georgian Bay Community School, and St. Mary's High School to explore careers in tourism and hospitality. Through seven interactive challenges, participants developed practical skills while connecting with industry professionals.
The initiative, led by Michael Agema of Addimin and supported by Regional Tourism Organization 7 (RTO7), focused on real-world learning in areas such as customer service, culinary arts, event planning, and tourism operations. Students were encouraged to collaborate, think creatively, and apply their classroom learning in a dynamic outdoor setting.
BWDSB students achieved notable success at the event. Walkerton District Community School earned top honours in the cookie bake-off challenge, impressing judges with their creativity and execution. Saugeen District Senior School was recognized with the overall award, highlighting consistent strength across all seven challenge areas.
Beyond the competition, the day emphasized career awareness and workforce readiness. Students engaged with industry partners, learning about employment opportunities and the diverse skills required in tourism and hospitality sectors across Bruce-Grey-Simcoe.
Events like the Great Canadian High School Hospitality Challenge align with BWDSB’s commitment to experiential learning and community partnerships. By working with organizations such as RTO7, the board continues to create opportunities for students to build confidence, gain practical experience, and explore future careers close to home.
