A bit of rain and cloud cover could hardly hamper student engagement at this year’s Indigenous Student Forum at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre. Approximately 90 Grades 7 – 12 students who self-identify as Indigenous gathered on Friday, May 2, 2025 for a wealth of activities and learning with their teachers, volunteers, and hosting staff from Bluewater District School Board’s Learning Services department. A total of nine schools (eight secondary and one elementary) were represented throughout the day.
A variety of outdoor and indoor workshops were provided for students to choose from, including Bannock making, porcupine quill harvesting, black ash basket creation, fire making, drumming, leather pouch making, guided walks, and powwow dance demonstrations and lessons. Other special highlights were a collaborative ribbon skirt making activity, which brought together a diverse selection of previously created student designs for final assembly, and a chance to play language bingo during lunch.
As per the tradition of past forums, listening to the student voice was a fundamental part of the day as students shared their feedback and ideas to inform future board planning and programming for Indigenous students.
Appreciation is extended to the many volunteers who donated their time and expertise to leading activities, along with board and school staff whose support and active participation ensured a meaningful event reflecting Indigenous history and culture in our communities.
