Celebrating Diversity at the First Multilingual Language Learner Symposium

On Wednesday, November 27, the inaugural Multilingual Language Learner (MLL) Symposium brought nearly 100 staff and students from Grades 7 to 12 together for a day of connection, creativity, and cultural celebration. Held in a warm and welcoming environment, the event highlighted the diverse backgrounds and experiences of multilingual learners, emphasizing the power of storytelling and self-expression.

At the heart of the symposium was Penciling It In: 27 Success Stories of Newcomers to Grey and Bruce Counties, a compelling book that chronicles the journeys of local immigrants. Several individuals featured in the book shared their personal stories, offering insights into their challenges and triumphs as they navigated life in a new country. These narratives resonated deeply with the audience, fostering empathy and understanding.

Adding to the richness of the day, Justine Yu from Living Hyphen led a dynamic session encouraging students to explore their cultural identities. Through guided activities, participants reflected on what makes their backgrounds unique, celebrating the intersections of language, heritage, and personal experience. Yu's workshop provided a safe space for students to share and connect, reinforcing the value of embracing one's cultural roots.

Creativity took center stage in the afternoon, as Ms. Klemm, an art teacher from Owen Sound District Secondary School, introduced students to the world of Word Art. Under her guidance, participants used meaningful words, symbols, and vibrant colors to craft visual representations of their identities. The resulting artworks were a testament to the students' individuality and cultural pride, each piece telling its own unique story.

The MLL Symposium was more than just an event—it was a celebration of diversity, resilience, and the unifying power of language. It provided an opportunity for students and staff to learn from one another, building bridges across cultures and fostering a sense of belonging. As the symposium concluded, the smiles on participants' faces reflected the day's success and the lasting impact of shared stories and creative expression.

Organizers hope this is just the beginning of an annual tradition, continuing to inspire and empower multilingual learners in the years to come.
