A Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) educator from Hillcrest Elementary School in Owen Sound is being honoured for her transformative work in environmental education, reconciliation, and student voice.
Teacher Edie Duncan has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Outstanding Service Award for the Western Region.
According to OPSBA, this prestigious award is presented annually to recognize one school board staff and/or volunteers from each region, whose service directly advances OPSBA’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities at their local school board, especially in advocacy, inclusion, equity, sustainability, and student well-being.
OPSBA cited several initiatives that Edie has led over the years, including land-based learning projects, such as maple syrup tapping, sustainability programs like Green Bin composting, and integrating Ojibway language and culture into daily classroom routines.
"Edie’s approach fosters inclusivity, empowers students to lead, and builds a strong sense of respect for the environment and Indigenous knowledge. This award reflects her lasting impact on students, schools, and the broader community. Recognizing local champions like Edie helps inspire others and affirms the values of equity, collaboration, and community engagement at the heart of public education." - OPSBA
