School Bus Driver Appreciation Day on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, presents a meaningful opportunity to recognize and express thanks to our many dedicated and outstanding bus drivers across our Bluewater District School Board communities.
These unsung heroes are the friendly faces that greet our student riders at the start of the school day and see them off safely at the school day’s end. The tremendous responsibility they shoulder in transporting students to and from school each day over a geographically diverse stretch of rural routes in Bruce and Grey counties cannot be understated. School bus drivers ensure an orderly riding environment while maintaining a sense of calm behind the wheel as they safely navigate our roads – rain, snow, or shine.
In addition to their daily routes, many of our drivers also fulfill transportation requests for school-related activities and trips. We thank them for the numerous ways in which they enrich the school experience for our students, staff, and families.
It is also important for us to extend our gratitude to the bus operators and Shared School Services – Transportation staff. These professionals work tirelessly behind the scenes coordinating, planning, and managing the routes that service all the families who depend on this vital service in our local school boards.
We also think of the many bus monitors who add an extra layer of safety and support for our student riders.
Please join us today and this week by sharing thanks with a bus driver for the professionalism and commitment to safety in all they do.
School Bus Driver Appreciation Day occurs during School Bus Safety Week from October 20 to 24, 2025. This week, we remind everyone who uses the road of their shared responsibility in keeping our students safe. From drivers and passengers to cyclists and pedestrians, all of us play an important role when it comes to road safety.
Motorists are reminded to come to a full stop when a school bus is displaying its flashing red lights. As per the Highway Traffic Act, failing to do so can result in severe penalties, such as significant fines, demerit points, and even jail time for repeated offences. It is also illegal to pass a school bus when it is displaying its stop sign and activating its red lights.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss school bus behaviour with their children. When on the bus, students should keep bags on their laps, remain seated, maintain respectful interactions with peers, and minimize distractions for the bus driver.
