As part of this year's Summer School program, a group of 75 Bluewater District School Board students recently attended an unforgettable trip, exploring Ottawa, Montreal, and New York City. The first ever Travel for Credit opportunity enabled students to earn Civics and Careers credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
In Ottawa, students had the unique opportunity to visit the House of Commons and Senate, network with Legislative Assistant Hayden Gowan (from Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Alex Ruff's office), explore the Supreme Court, and delve into history at the Canadian War Museum. They experienced a thrilling Haunted Walk of Ottawa (walking tour), and participated in an interactive tour and workshop at the Diefenbunker: Canada's Cold War Museum.
In Montreal, the journey continued with a tour of Concordia University, a breathtaking visit to the Kondiaronk Belvedere at the top of Mount Royal, and a guided tour of the city that included sampling fresh-baked Montreal bagels and a lap around the F1 track. Students also visited the stunning Notre-Dame Basilica, toured the Montreal archaeology and history complex, and enjoyed an authentic dining experience at a traditional sugar shack complete with a lesson on how to play the spoons.
In New York City, students observed the cityscape from the Edge at Hudson Yards, walked the scenic High Line, and visited iconic landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty and the United Nations. They attended the Broadway musical, "Water for Elephants," toured Wall Street and the Financial District, and took part in a 9/11 survivor-led memorial tour. Additional highlights included visits to Times Square, a walk through Central Park, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the city.
This enriching experience was made possible through the dedication and support of these amazing chaperones: Mr. Carder, Mr. Marcell, Mrs. Garland, and Mrs. Filsinger. Special thanks to teachers Mr. Munro, Mrs. Koeslag, and Ms. Weppler for organizing and facilitating this incredible trip.
