Two Bluewater District School Board schools are top 10 finalists in CBC Music’s Canadian Music Class Challenge 2022!  Beaver Valley Community School in Thornbury has placed in the top 10 in the Junior Vocal (Grades 7-10) category, while Grey Highlands Secondary School in Flesherton is among the top 10 in the category for Junior Instrumental (Grades 7-10).

CBC invites music instructors from across Canada annually to submit a cover version of a Canadian song they have taught their students from a pre-approved list.  This year, hundreds of diverse musical submissions were received from coast to coast with only the best of the best selected by the judges as finalists in 11 categories.  The top three classes in each category will be announced on Wednesday, December 14.

Finalist Beaver Valley Community School’s infectious version of “The Girl” by City and Colour submitted by Mrs. Kearns features the combined effort of members of the ukulele/guitar club and Ms. Klasen’s Grade 7 class.

At Grey Highlands Secondary School, two classes entered the contest with Mrs. Loder’s Grade 10 students placing in the top 10 with their jazzy cover of “Bird Song” by David Myles.  Students analyzed and pulled the main motifs out of the song, chose instruments to play each line, and created the arrangement without sheet music.  A student also edited the video submission.

First place winners in the categories for both schools will each receive $3,000 in new musical instruments along with a plaque.  Those placing second and third will each receive a plaque.

Congratulations to Beaver Valley Community School and Grey Highlands Secondary School on their amazing entries, and best of luck in the final stage of the challenge!  Both video submissions can be viewed below.
