Frequently Asked Questions for Parents

What if I don’t speak French?

It is not necessary for you to speak French for your child to be successful in the French Immersion program. The French programs at BWDSB are designed for children of non-French speaking parents.

What if English is not our first language?

Research states that English Language Learners who participate in FSL programs perform as well as English-speaking students. All students are welcome in all FSL programs.

How can I support my child?

Parents can play a significant role in ensuring their child’s success.  They can support through:

    • Being supportive of FSL programs.
    • Ensuring your child develops good overall learning habits
    • Celebrating learning- including the learning that happens from making mistakes!
    •  Reading and talking to their child regularly and listening to him/her read aloud.
    •  Finding ways to expose their child to French outside of school time.
    • Communicating your questions and concerns with teachers.

What if my child experiences difficulties in an FSL program?

Contact your child’s teachers who can suggest ways to support your child.
