Hillcrest Central Resource Program Receives Funding

Representatives from the South Bruce Community Liaison Committee (CLC), the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), and Hillcrest Central School met for a formal cheque presentation in Teeswater on Wednesday afternoon.
At the November 2020 meeting of the CLC, the committee members approved a request from Hillcrest Central School to provide funding support for the purchase of decodable educational resources, as well as teacher workbooks to guide educational instruction.
In a letter to the CLC, Learning Resource Teacher Lisa Jamieson and Principal Stephanie Bouchard outlined the success of the Resource Program that takes place at Hillcrest Central School.
“For many years, Hillcrest Central School has run a Resource Program for students and we have received an overwhelming amount of interest and positive feedback from parents. It is beneficial to all of our students from Kindergarten to Grade 8, including students who require additional support and individualized programming to help build the foundational skills required to read fluently,” said Stephanie Bouchard.
Both Jamieson and Bouchard recognized the emphasis placed on student learning by CLC members, and sought their funding support to ensure that sufficient resources would be made available to allow them to continue to offer a strong program for Hillcrest students.
“We now have decodable educational resources and teacher workbooks to encourage a love for reading. A big thank you to the CLC for the donation,” said Bouchard.
“The Committee members feel strongly about equipping the young people of South Bruce with the educational tools and resources they need to be successful. We are pleased that the Resource Program at Hillcrest will continue to support the students that need it,” said Les Nichols, CLC Member.
“We’re really happy to be able to support this important program at Hillcrest, and support these wonderful local educators trying to provide young people with the potential for a life-long love of learning through reading” said Paul Austin, Relationship Manager at the NWMO.
The donation in the amount of $3,000 came from the Early Investments in Education and Skills (EIES) fund. This NWMO funding program exists for capacity building purposes in communities that have ongoing participation in the Adaptive Phased Management (APM) project. It provides investments in education as well as training for youth and the community, and is made available annually to any of the elementary schools in the Municipality of South Bruce. The EIES fund also aims to provide transferable skills to community members that would be applicable across a range of projects and careers.
