Getting Crafty at Spruce Ridge
Posted on 10/12/2021
Career exploration, art, literacy, and experiential learning have all been wrapped into one at Spruce Ridge Community School! Students in 7/8 Grant have been busy crafting as part of a virtual activity to help them explore skilled trades related career pathways.
The students viewed some videos from Ashwood Sawmill, which showed each piece of wood being cut for their project, and provided a glimpse into how a sawmill works. The students were then able to employ their creativity as they developed their masterpieces using the Ashwood Sawmill wood. As a final step, they joined together to create a procedural piece of writing that focused on strong verbs, nonrepetitive language, and editing/revising.
The students are now selecting a skill or project that they would like to try at home and writing their own procedural piece about it. We may have future Level 1 Carpentry students in our midst!
Student quotes:
"I really enjoyed this project. Can we do something like this again?"
"I learned how sawmills work, which I have been wanting to research for a while. I also learned how much work goes into projects with wood, which we take for granted."
"I learned that sawmills don't have to be a big business, and that it can be something you enjoy as a hobby."
