School Bus Safety Week from October 16 to 20 emphasizes the critical role of safety for those who ride school buses and the drivers who share the road with them. All road users, whether drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, or those on the school bus, have an essential part to play. It is crucial for everyone to be attentive, understand their surroundings, and adhere to traffic regulations to ensure a safe environment for all.
A key rule to remember is that when a school bus displays its flashing red lights, all vehicles must come to a complete stop. Failing to do so can result in hefty fines and demerit points, according to the Highway Traffic Act. Moreover, it is illegal to overtake a school bus when it is showing its stop sign and activated red lights.
It is beneficial for parents/guardians to discuss school bus behaviour with their children. When on the bus, students are encouraged to keep their bags on their laps, remain seated throughout the trip, and maintain respectful interactions with their peers. Distractions to the bus driver should be minimized.
On October 18, we celebrate School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Bluewater District School Board shares thanks and gratitude with our bus drivers for their commitment to safety while transporting our students daily. The responsibility they assume is pivotal, not only in daily commutes, but also in other school-related activities and trips. In addition to our drivers, a big 'thank you' is extended to the many bus monitors, operators, and the team at the Student Transportation Service Consortium of Grey-Bruce for their hard work and dedication.
Let us all take a moment this week to show appreciation to our bus drivers and the staff supporting them. Their efforts play a significant role in the safety of our communities.
