Strike up the band! November and December are popular months when it comes to showcasing the musical talent of students and staff in our schools.
Owen Sound District Secondary School (OSDSS) is one of many schools in Bluewater District School Board that offers a quality music program every year.
On that note (no pun intended), the music department at OSDSS will be holding a series of concerts between December 1 and 8, 2023 to promote music education. The concerts will educate students and the community on the benefits of participating in music and the instruments that are available for study at OSDSS.
The OSDSS music classes will be visiting Hillcrest Elementary, Keppel-Sarawak Elementary, East Ridge Community, Holland-Chatsworth Central, Arran-Tara Elementary, and Amabel-Sauble Community schools. There will also be a concert on Tuesday, December 5 at OSDSS during the Grade 8 open house for parents/guardians and the community. The evening runs from 6:30 until 8:00.
Many believe that learning a musical instrument or how to sing should not be optional. Music is an essential part of education because it expands creative skills and students can learn more about the value of teamwork and collaboration. Around the world, music promotes community as it is cherished as a form of communication with a common belief among scholars that it is intrinsically linked to cultural identity in ways of history and language.
