Students and staff with JDSS SHSM trailerThe five Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs at John Diefenbaker Senior School (JDSS) are proud to showcase their recently purchased 18-foot enclosed SHSM trailer.

The new trailer will be used to pick up equipment, tools, and products, and for transporting items required for local, regional, and provincial skills competitions. Other programs and extracurriculars, such as Music and Drama, will also benefit from the trailer through its ability to transport instruments, props, and supplies for out-of-school performances.

Currently, JDSS offers five SHSM programs: Transportation, Manufacturing, Hospitality and Tourism, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), and Construction. These programs promote graduation by providing Grade 11 and 12 students with the opportunity to develop specialized knowledge and skills. Participants gain sector-recognized certification and career relevant training. All students participating in an SHSM must complete a co-op placement to meet the program requirements. The co-ops provide students with experiential learning opportunities in a field of their interest.

Two students contributed to the design of the new SHSM trailer. Trinity Genereux, a Grade 12 ICT student at JDSS, used her creative talents to design the five logos depicted on the trailer as part of her co-op placement. The designs represent each of the SHSM programs that are proudly offered at JDSS. In the future, Trinity plans to pursue a career in video editing.

Landon Heathers, a Grade 12 SHSM Manufacturing student at Owen Sound District Secondary School, completed a co-op placement at Imagewraps in Owen Sound. Landon helped with the installation of the multi-panel wrap. Landon is pleased to have been offered summer employment upon completion of his co-op placement.

Greg Heathers, the teacher in charge of the JDSS Transportation SHSM program, said “the trailer is a great way to promote the school's Specialist High Skills Major programs and the many opportunities that exist within the skilled trades.”

Good things are happening at JDSS, so be sure to keep your eye out for the new SHSM trailer!
