Bluewater District School Board is thrilled to receive approved funding from the Ministry of Education for a new 236 pupil school in the town of Markdale, Ontario. This new school will replace the current Beavercrest Community School and will host both childcare rooms and Early ON at the same location. A funding amount of $6.4 million will be used to complete the new school with additional funding of $2.1 million to create the additional childcare and Early ON spaces. 

 

  

Board staff have worked with the Municipality of Grey Highlands, County of Grey and the Child Care operator to develop a site plan for the proposed new school.  Bluewater District School Board would like to invite members of the public to review the site plan drawings found below. If you have a question, please feel free to use the link below. Questions will be answered and posted to this page for parents/guardians and community members to review.

Questions and Answers

Q: How many students will the school accommodate? 

A: The capacity of the new Beavercrest Community School will be 236 students 

Q: Is there childcare included in the new build?

A: $2.1 million in funding has been provided by the Ministry of Education to create two childcare and two EarlyON rooms at the same location. 

Q: When will construction begin on the new school

A: The project will go to Tender in the fall of 2021. All proceedings must be approved by the Ministry of Education. Construction could begin as early as Spring 2022. 

Q: What are some of the main features of the new school?

A: The new school will feature two kindergarten rooms, six additional classrooms, learning commons, a gymnasium and art room. 

Q: Will the child care and EarlyON Centre have their our dedicated outdoor space separate from the students?

A: Yes, the daycare and EarlyON centre will have their own dedicated outdoor space as well as a separate entrance/drop off area and parking. 

Q: Why design for only 236 students? Based on the growing population we already know that will not be big enough.

A: The Ministry of Education provides funding based on current enrollment plus short-term forecasted growth. Therefore, based on the funding application, the Ministry approved funding for a 236-pupil space school. Bluewater builds its schools with the potential for future expansion and will do so with this build

Q: Why only 6 classrooms for 8 grades?

A: Classrooms with combined grades are typical for schools of this size. There is also a dedicated art/music room and resource room for these grades.

Q: What is the future addition areas for (there are two)?

A: When designing and building new schools, future expansion is considered. Items like site plan, underground services are designed to accommodate a future addition should it be required.

Q: Will the gym be expanded at some point?

A: The gym is positioned to allow for an expansion in the future if required.

Q: Is there a stage planned for the gym (or elsewhere). Currently no room for performance stage in current gym design.

A: There is no stage included in the current floor plan. For performances, risers can be used, as well as other moveable pieces to create varying levels if required.

Q: What are the learning commons… is this the library?

A: A Learning Commons is a shared space for information technology, collaboration, group work, socialization, playing games and researching. It can include library books or other shared materials for student use.

Q: Only 1 washroom/toilet per change room at the gym? This does not seem adequate.

A: For elementary use, 1 toilet per change room is standard.

Q: It is our understanding that Ministry funding does not include or cover the cost of outdoor equipment or play ground facilities. Is this true?

A: Ministry funding is provided for the construction of the new school. Equipment such as outdoor play ground equipment is funded from other sources.

Q: If that is the case, can money offered by local corporations that has not been allocated toward the community hub be used for outdoor play ground equipment?

A: Community members and local corporations are encouraged to work with the school administrator should they wish to fundraise for new play ground equipment. Board Procedure, AP 3820-D, Playspaces and Equipment outlines the process and responsibilities of those involved.

Q: Could the child care centre be moved to the north side of the building to allow for more green space between the building and neighbouring properties?

A: The design of the school location and configuration considered a number of factors such as: lot size, street frontage, traffic flow and transportation requirements, and maintaining occupancy of the current Beavercrest Community School. The configuration presented accommodates these factors.
